Freedom of Information

You have the right to request information from public organisations under the Freedom of Information Act.

What you can ask for

You can request information such as:

  • policies, procedures and protocols
  • financial and performance data
  • contracts and commissioning information
  • reports and decision-making records

You cannot use a Freedom of Information request (FOI) to access personal information. If you want information about yourself or someone you represent, you can make a Subject Access Request (SAR).

Before you make a request

Some information is already publicly available.

Before making a request, check if you can find the information:

If information is already accessible elsewhere, we may apply Section 21 (information that is already publicly available) of the Freedom of Information Act.

How to make a request

FOI requests need to be made in writing. You can email, write a letter or use an online form.

Include:

  • your name
  • your contact details (email or address)
  • a clear description of the information you want

Response times

We will:

  • acknowledge your request
  • respond within 20 working days, in line with the Freedom of Information Act

Sometimes we may take longer. This can happen if:

  • we need more information from you
  • we need to consider the public interest

We will let you know if this applies.

Costs

FOI requests are usually free. However, we may refuse a request if it would cost more than £450 to process. This is based on a standard rate of £25 per hour.

If this happens, we will help you refine your request where possible.

When we may withhold information

In some cases, we may not be able to provide all or part of the information requested.

This may include:

  • personal or confidential information
  • information related to investigations or audits
  • information that could affect how public services are managed
  • information planned for future publication

If we withhold information, we will explain:

  • the reason
  • which exemption applies
  • your right to challenge the decision

If you are unhappy with our response

You can ask us to review your request if you are not satisfied.

You should:

  • contact us within 2 months of our response
  • include your FOI reference number

Use the same contact details you used for your original request.

If you are still unhappy after an internal review, you can contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.
