Bristol Royal Infirmary has served the city for centuries. The Old Building opened in 1735 and has played a major role in healthcare for people in Bristol and the wider region.
Bristol Eye Hospital has served the people of Bristol since 1810 and is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialist eye hospitals.
Children’s hospital services in Bristol date back to the 19th century. The current Bristol Royal Hospital for Children building opened in 2001 and was the first purpose-built children’s hospital in the South West. Specialist children’s services have since been brought together to create one centre of excellence in Bristol.
Southmead Hospital has deep roots in north Bristol. Historic images and records show Southmead War Hospital operating during the First World War period, with the site later developing as Southmead General Hospital and then as a major modern hospital campus.
Weston General Hospital serves Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset and surrounding areas. The modern hospital site at Grange Road, Uphill, was built in 1986 and continues to play a central role in care for its local community.
Our more recent history is also one of collaboration. Clinical teams have worked together on areas such as NHS at Home, stroke pathways and specialist heart and lung therapy. The Joint Clinical Strategy now sets a shared ambition for seamless, high-quality, equitable and sustainable care, organised around patients and populations rather than organisational boundaries.
