Today, 16 September 2026, marks Weston General Hospital’s 40th Anniversary.
Weston General Hospital provides a range of NHS services, including cancer, cardiology, outpatients’ clinics, children’s services, urgent and emergency care, physiotherapy and a midwife-led birth centre to a population of over 200,000 people.
In 2025/26, hospital teams treated almost a quarter of a million people.
The hospital opened in 1986 in Uphill at an initial cost of £20million, bringing together services offered, at the Queen Alexandra Memorial Hospital, Royal Hospital (also known as West of England Sanatorium) and Ashcombe House Maternity Hospital.
The first patient in the Emergency Department (or casualty as it was known) was Weston General Hospital’s Housekeeping Manager Joan, who injured her leg on her way into work.
Weston nurse Helen Arnold who treated Joan on the opening day, still works at Weston General Hospital in the emergency department today.
Since opening in 1986 the hospital has grown. In 2003, the hospital opened the Jackson Barstow Wing, a dedicated oncology and haematology unit.
Four years later, in 2007, the Seashore Centre opened, seeing 1,121 children for outpatients appointments and 1,454 in the day care ward, in the first year.
In 2023, following £5million investment from NHS England, teams celebrated the opening of the Same Day Emergency Care Unit, meaning more patients could be treated and return home on the same day.
Alongside changes to the estate, Weston General Hospital has been recognised for national achievements and service throughout its history.
The Weston Integrated Sexual Health (WISH) was recognised by Terence Higgins Trust as only one of three health projects to receive the “Sex Factor” title, for timely access to services in 2007.
A year later, volunteers visited Number 10 Downing Street to celebrate the NHS’s 60th birthday and more recently, the Haematology team won the Myeloma UK Clinical Service Excellence Programme award, recognising outstanding care, patient-focused innovation and exceptional support for people living with incurable blood cancer in 2023.
Weston General Hospital has also benefited from support from dedicated and passionate local community, partners and supporters. This includes a hospital staff organised bed-push along the sea front for Breast Cancer Awareness in 2001 and Monty Python star John Cleese and double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell joining The Scanner Appeal campaign in 2016.
In Autumn 2024, Weston’s Dementia, Delirium and Falls team, Alive team, and Bristol & Weston Hospital’s Charity, began providing gardening sessions in Weston General Hospital’s Rainbow Garden to offer nature-based activities and therapeutic engagement for people living with dementia while staying at the hospital.

“Weston General Hospital represents the thriving community it serves, through the people who we care for, our passionate, ambitious, and dedicated colleagues, and our supporters who have taken on bed-pushes, knitted, ran, walked and swam in support of our hospital. “As we celebrate 40 years of Weston General Hospital, I want to recognise everything that has been achieved so far, as well as the exciting vision we have for health care in Weston in the future.”
In April 2020, Weston General Hospital formally joined University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, which later became Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (BFT) in July 2026.
As part of BFT, Weston General Hospital is one of 13 hospital sites, 28,000 colleagues with a £2.6billion annual turnover.

“This has been possible thanks to the dedication, drive and compassion shown by our teams every day, who continue to innovate and collaborate with communities and partners to deliver for local people.
“Working closely with primary care, community services, and voluntary and community organisations we are putting focus on providing the services and support our population needs to live well, for longer.
“Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Weston’s rich past, present and future.”
Staff at Weston General Hospital will be celebrating the anniversary with tea, cake, a historic photo exhibition and performances from poet in residence Beth Calverley and Marvin Muoneké.
