Volunteer with us

Help people and make a difference.

Our volunteers help patients, families, visitors, and staff every day. They make hospital visits easier, kinder, and less lonely.

We want volunteers at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust to feel welcome, safe, and valued.

Who can volunteer

You can apply if you are:

  • 16 or older (some roles need you to be 17 or 18+)
  • kind and willing to help others

We welcome people from all backgrounds.

What volunteers do

Volunteers do many types of roles, such as:

  • saying hello and helping people find their way
  • sitting and talking with patients
  • helping at mealtimes
  • playing with children
  • supporting families and visitors

You will be normally be working in just one area. We can support you to gain experience in other areas and roles, where possible.

Where you can volunteer

You can volunteer at any Trust hospital or location, including:

  • Bristol Royal Infirmary
  • Bristol Royal Hospital for Children
  • Weston General Hospital
  • Southmead Hospital

Time you need to give

You should:

  • help for 2 to 4 hours each week
  • come on the same day and time each week
  • stay in the volunteering role for at least 6 months

This helps patients and staff get to know you.

How to apply

To become a volunteer:

  1. Fill in an application.
  2. Come to an interview.
  3. Complete checks and training.

This process can take about 6 weeks before you start.

Checks and safety

Before you start, we must:

  • check your details
  • make sure you are well enough to volunteer
  • make sure it is safe for you to work in a hospital

This keeps patients, staff, and volunteers safe.

Training

You do not need experience. We will train you. You will also attend an induction (starting session).

You must complete training about:

  • keeping people safe
  • infection control (stopping germs spreading)
  • helping people with dementia
  • treating people fairly and with respect

Working in the hospital

Hospitals are busy places. You will:

  • follow rules and guidance
  • work with staff
  • be supervised

Volunteering is not work experience or job shadowing. You will not do clinical tasks (like a doctor or nurse).

Why volunteer

Volunteering can help you:

  • make people feel better
  • meet new people
  • build confidence
  • learn new skills
  • get experience for jobs or study

Many people also feel happy and proud helping others.

When you'll volunteer

Volunteers are needed every day, including weekends.

Your first training session (induction) is usually on a weekday.

Getting here

We ask you to use public transport, walk, or cycle if possible.

If you drive, you may be able to get reduced rate or free parking.

Our promise to you

We will:

  • give you a safe place to volunteer
  • support and guide you
  • treat you with respect
  • listen to your feedback
